Soon after Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine is released, the new LTS version of Ubuntu, called 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa, has just begun development by looking at the archive. According to archive.ubuntu.com, the new development branch by the name of “focal” just appeared. There are not many differences from “eoan” because it started very early.

If you want to perform an upgrade to this development version, either open the terminal and write sudo do-release-upgrade -d, or:

  1. Open the terminal
  2. Open visudo. It can detect errors in your config.
  3. Replace all instances of your Ubuntu codename (eg. If you’re upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver, replace bionic with focal)
  4. Save the file, and run sudo apt update
  5. Finally, run sudo apt dist-upgrade
  6. Remove some of the unneeded packages by running sudo apt autoremove
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 in case an update to a program or several programs have appeared (Optional)
  8. Restart your computer

At the start-up, when you go to Settings > About, you will see the new overview summarizing the new version you’re running as “Ubuntu Focal Fossa (development branch).”

Our first blog post involving our usage of Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa will be done once a clear reinstall is made. Keep on reporting bugs and security issues. We’ll see you soon.
