CentOS is Gone!

CentOS, a free variant of the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is getting abandoned starting from June 30th, 2024. This means that this article is a wake-up call for those who still use CentOS in their servers and in their desktops due to the fact that, back in 2020, Red Hat shifted their focus to CentOS Stream, which would track versions just ahead of the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases.

Additionally, Red Hat has made changes to the accessibility of their source code so that it would no longer be accessible through normal means. This means that alternative distributions, such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, are suffering from the lack of source availability that is required to create new versions of these distributions.

On June 30th, 2024, CentOS 7 will no longer be supported. Not only that, but the entire CentOS distribution will be joining in the abandonware distribution list. This line of the Red Hat distribution will no longer receive security updates, which means that computers that are still running CentOS after June 30th will be vulnerable to future security vulnerabilities across multiple programs and libraries, such as OpenSSL and OpenSSH.

After June 30th, you have three options:

We recommend that you migrate your systems to one of the above options.

Enjoy!
